Artiguist Source, Uruguay (original) (raw)

The political party Vertiente Artiguista (Artiguist Source) is a member of the coalition Encuentro Progresista-Frente Amplio-Nueva Mayora that won the presidential election of October 2004.

This party was founded in 1989. It takes its name to pay homage to the "Artiguismo" (Artiguism), the ideas of the Uruguayan national hero, Jos Gervasio Artigas. Vertiente Artiguista claims back these Artiguist ideas (according to Vertiente Artiguista website these Artiguist ideas are: "anti colonialialist, liberator, pro-Latin American integration, liberal, republican, and democratic"). The party also has social-democrat, center-left ideas.

The most important leader of this party is Mariano Arana, the present day Mayor of the City of Montevideo.
